Spring is in the air!

It’s been so chilly lately that gardening hasn’t been on the top of my list of things to do I have to say. But with the recent warmish weather I’ve been inspired to get back out and hit the streets armed with a load of bulbs and some compost.

On yesterdays dig I was joined by Wendy Hurrell and the lovely crew from Inside London and we ventured to Sutton in South London where there is certainly no shortage of potholes.

More pictures to follow shortly!

A Winter Garden

I recently headed out on a dig with a French TV crew for some guerilla gardening…it was load of fun – they sure were up for an adventure.

I snapped my latest little garden right before it was rundown :(

(I’m totally addicted to the hipstamatic app on my iphone!)

A winter garden

Here’s an excerpt from my recent interview for a German TV channel that I did earlier in the year…

New dig, on a new bike!

So yesterday’s cloudy weather didn’t deter punters at Columbia Rd. markets, it was super busy! I managed to grab some Gerberas and pansies for a couple of digs for the afternoon. I headed out with Stephanie from Londoninsight (pics to follow shortly!).

Columbia Rd Markets

I also decided to try out London’s new cycle hire scheme. If you want to know more about the scheme, check it out. My thoughts? If you’re not in a hurry, these bikes are great. They’re comfy and easy to ride. They cruise nicely, although I’m not sure I’d want to be heading up a steep hill on one. They do have a great little bag carrier on the front too (handy for pot plants!) I did feel like a Barclay’s advert, but hey I guess someone had to pay for them.

So here is my latest dig with Yellow Gerberas just off Bethnal Green Road…

My latest creation

We’ve recently shot a short film about these little gardens and we’re looking for music for the film. You can check it out and pitch your music tracks here on HUMTOO.

Whitechapel is sporting a new little garden!

My recent little garden is in support of the Aussie Cricket team…

I added some Pansies to this garden in support of The Pansy Project. They recently had their facebook page taken down for some unknown reason – to learn more check out their site: The Pansy Project.

I was recently sent these photos too which I wanted to post, check out this great effort from Riga!

Sunshine!

My latest creation to celebrate the recent sunshine!

The recent amazing sunshine inspired my latest little garden.

It seems pothole gardens are popping up everywhere, check these awesome pictures just in from Latvia, Riga here! Great stuff! (I do apologize for previously saying it was in Russia!)

Guerrilla Gardening heros…

The past few days have been fairly hectic, to say the least! I’ve managed to get 2 gardens dug, and I’ve also been sent some links I wanted to post up on the blog.

I got a comment on the blog from Richard Reynolds (the godfather of Guerrilla Gardening) that was really positive about my work and I have been feeling quite chuffed ever since. He also pointed me towards some other keen Guerrilla Gardeners of note. The concept of pothole gardening goes back quite a while – the earliest example being a class in the states and also Shannon Spanhake and others have been flexing their green fingers in potholes too. Another great project in Dublin is happening here…

Guerrilla Gardening is all about getting out there, doing something, getting your hands dirty and creating something that improves the space you live in. So go on, get involved and if you need some inspiration, check out the pictures on my blog (mostly taken by Al) or head to the forums here! If you send me some photos of your work I might post them here on the blog.

I’m off to enjoy the sunshine (and hunt for a couple more potholes).

Oh, and I was sent this beauty earlier in the week from Kathy. She describes it as a ‘Surrey Special’…

Dig 7

So this morning as I was heading off with some serious colours under my arm and I was checking off everything in my head. Plants, check…camera, check…sense of humour, check…bum crack, check…photographer from the Evening Standard, what the? I got a call from a journo the other day wondering if a photographer could join me on my next dig. This morning we headed to the pothole just off Commercial Street that I’d spied yesterday and away I went, working my ‘magic’.

Dig 7 - note the new graffitti I caught in the background, which was in progress yesterday!

Incidentally I just noticed that the photo I took yesterday had a guy in the background creating some graffiti. (Check out that post below) In these photos, you can see that finished piece of art! Whoever you are, you’re really talented!

5th Dig – North View Road

Here’s some pics from my 5th Dig, next to North View Road in North London.  Design by Al!

I used some more delicate plants on this dig, as we hoped our little garden might survive a little longer on the footpath!
