Holes Of Happiness

One thing that always amazes me is how people react to my gardens. So much so that I’ve created this short film, Holes Of Happiness (with the help of Cheyne and friends).

We tried to capture peoples first reactions to our gardening antics, and we asked them about what they were looking at and why they thought they existed.

Let me know what you think!

Knitting up a storm…

Inspired by a lovely little piece of knitting sent to me recently, here’s my latest little garden, created in Moss Place East London.

Thank you so much Louise for sending me this lovely little knitted flower which now has a home outside Buckingham Palace, London.

I’d like to dedicate this post to those close to me who have suffered from the effects of cancer this year. Fingers crossed that next year is a healthy one. If you’re doing some last minute shopping for Christmas, why not consider giving in celebration? It’s a great way of giving that helps to benefit Cancer Research.

All the best for 2012.

A few bricks short in Brick Lane…

Brick Lane, the heart of East London’s street art scene, got a little bit of green fingering over the weekend.

This massive pothole, which has been there for over a month, made the perfect setting for my latest little creation.

Little moments of happiness…

Here’s a little film featuring my little gardens…

Thanks to the talented Nadia Ackerman for letting me use her wonderful song.

Everyone loves mail…

Everyone loves mail, right?

Yesterday, I headed out with Zing from The East London Gardener to create a little Autumnal garden, complete with a little mailbox.

I also caught this fantastic busker at Columbia Road Markets – check him out!

A royal visitor…

I was hoping to create a royal pothole garden to celebrate the arrival of the queen in Canberra, Australia (you may have seen the garden I created to celebrate the royal wedding earlier this year). But alas, Canberra’s roads are in such good shape I couldn’t actually find a decent pothole!

I was did see the queen this morning though, at Canberra’s Floriade festival of flowers. She arrived by boat and we even got a wave, much to the delight of the crowd who’d gathered to see her.

I visited Floriade recently to get some ideas for some new gardens, here are a few of my snaps.

Here’s the garden Kate and I created for the royal wedding recently!

Floating Filipino government officials in one of my gardens!

I’m not sure if you’ve heard about them, but a blogger picked up some seriously dodgy photoshopping of some Filipino government officials recently, and they’ve become an internet sensation! The trio have been photoshopped everywhere, from South Park to The Price Is Right – check out the Facebook page.

I found it so amusing I’ve put them in one of my pothole gardens!

I’m on twitter and facebook.

Getting dirty for down under…

I blogged recently about my chat with Ryk Goddard on ABC Radio. After our discussion, I agreed to create a little garden for Ryk with an Australian theme. After some searching I managed to find some Kangaroo Paw in London…it’s harder than you might think!

Ryk also discussed Hobart’s Phantom Knitter with me, a lovely project that’s got plenty of press over the past few months.

Well The Phantom Knitter posted me the cuttest little piece of knitting, which I found a home for in Trafalgar Square this morning.

Here’s a little video we made of our antics and a couple of pics. Enjoy!

The Aussie garden…

And The Phantom Knitter goes global!

I also recently submitted a post to My City Is – check it out, it’s a great little project (even though I might be a little biased!) www.mycity.is

Spring/Summer gardens

As summer limps off and winter rolls in, I thought I’d post some of my favourite green fingered creations from the past Spring/Summer.

The garden I created for the new Westfield on the Olympic site was filmed – here’s the interview:

One of my favourites was the royal wedding garden. I was joined by Kate from I am not a celebrity -

A couple of outings with Stephanie were load of fun, here are some of her brilliant snaps -

There was also my most ambitious garden ever -

And some of my gardens are even starting to attract some wildlife…

Some Autumnal creations are on their way. I’m also on Facebook and Twitter, come join me!

Some reactions to my gardens…

I think every post on this blog to date has included a garden or two. This post is a little bit different.

One of the things I really enjoy about my gardening adventures is the different reactions people have to my gardens. Most people enjoy them and take them in the way I intended, but not everyone.

Here are some fantastic shots Stephanie has captured of some reactions to a few of my gardens. Enjoy!

Some love for London…

London, indeed the UK, needs some love right now. My latest little garden is my loving London garden. There are no props, no chairs, no tennis court, just some good old fashioned love.

A rather perplexed, but happy passer by.

As I was walking around looking for a suitable spot for my garden (yes walking, my replacement bike that my mate Kate gave me was stolen during the riots), I spied this new piece and thought it appropriate for this post.

I also spied some of Pablo Delgado’s street art…love it.

Some inspiration from down under

I posted some pics on my facebook page from my recent shoot with Story Worldwide, here is the garden we created (the video is on its way). We had a great morning over on the Olympic site – I created a little picnic garden for all those tired shoppers when the Westfield Centre opens.

A few weeks ago I had a great chat with Ryk Goddard on ABC Tasmania and they’re sending me over some things for a Tasmanian themed pothole garden. I headed to the British Museum to get some inspiration from the Australian Season exhibition. Here are a couple of snaps from the wonderful Australian garden they’ve created.

Thanks to everyone who wrote to me about my stolen bike :) I appreciate it!

100 little pothole gardens at Cross Bones graveyard

Continuing my adventures south of the river with Stephanie we recently headed to Cross Bones, a post-medieval burial ground for “single women”, a little know site around the corner from Borough markets in South London.

It took quite a while to create these mini gardens, but I thought they were really quite striking!

For more information on the Graveyard, check out the website.

Don’t forget you can join me on Facebook here and I’m also tweeting here.

In memory of my stolen bike

I had a busy Saturday in South London, first stop the New Covent Garden Market. What an amazing selection of flowers and plants they have at this time of year.

Next stop was this little pothole just around the corner from Borough markets. I created this garden in memory of my bike that was stolen a few months back.

We had some great reactions from some unsuspecting tourists! More pics to follow shortly – don’t forget you can join me on Facebook here and I’m also tweeting here.

A confused little garden…

Here’s a short video showing how my latest little garden came about – enjoy!

Thanks to HUMTOO for the great music track.

I also wanted to post a link to the inspiring work of Anna Garforth who has just made a series growing tube signs – check it out here.

Don’t forget you can join me on Facebook here and I’m also tweeting here.

Confused garden…

I was recently commissioned to create a new little garden for confused.com. I was over the moon, albeit a little intimidated by the brief – to create a little pothole garden with a road running through it with a little street sign warning of the potholes in the road!

This is by far my most ambitious garden yet.

Armed with some tiny conifers, alpine grass, a Dianthus and some others bits and pieces, I found this pothole just off Valance Road in East London, rolled up my sleeves and began gardening. Enjoy!

I did shoot a short film of the dig and I’ll post it shortly.

Don’t forget you can join me on Facebook here and I’m also tweeting here.

A and B Tyres

On my recent outing with Stephanie, we created this little bundle of colour outside A and B Tyres, much to the amusement of the owner.

After being pestered about it for the past few months, I’ve finally got off my butt and created a Facebook page, I’m also tweeting here.

Also, thanks to Hanna Welin for this great write up about our adventures gardening. Stay tuned as I’ve some very exciting news which I’ll be announcing here on the blog shortly…

Wimbledon

Yesterday I posted some snaps of my Wimbledon garden – as promised here is a short video that Tom and I put together featuring a squirrel and pigeon who were very interested in what we were doing!

Don’t forget to join me on Facebook here, YouTube here and Twitter here.

The pigeons of Wimbledon

Wimbledon kicks off tomorrow. Happy memories of queuing, eating strawberries and sipping champagne spring to mind. As a big Wimbledon fan myself (I spent a day in queue a few years back) I decided to create a wee garden to celebrate the start of this fantastic tournament.

True to Wimbledon form, it started to rain as soon as we started creating this little pothole garden. We had some interesting local wildlife visit us including a squirrel and a pigeon during the dig (video to follow shortly).

We did, of course, need to mow the grass before proceedings began…

Living Wall

A while back I experimented with my first “wall garden“. Here’s my second attempt (pictures just in, thanks to Stephanie Wolff). A colourful array of Pansies have brightened up this little hole which has made the perfect pot. I think it works really well with the graffiti on the wall.

Speaking of wall gardens, last night my mate Kate showed me this amazing creation outside the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London. This living wall is a recreation of Van Gough’s A Wheatfield, with Cypresses. An incredible 8,000 plants make up this living wall.

If you get a chance, check it out. It is absolutely spectacular.

A little clothes line…

Growing up in Australia, my childhood memories are chock full of adventures at the clothes line.

On my recent outing with Stephanie Wolff, I created this little clothes line garden complete with pegs, clothes basket, a fork and a spade.

Todd Bieber recently sent me this video, which documents his vigilante garden in Brooklyn. It reminded me of the vegetable pothole garden I recently blogged about.

Enjoy!

Some more little gardens…

While Chelsea flower show might be in full swing (my invite is obviously still in the mail…) so are my little gardens. I headed out today with my friend Stephanie Wolff from London Insight, to create some little beauties. I thought I’d post a few – more are on the way shortly.

As you can see the gardens at Chelsea aren’t the only gardens in London that are having issues with the wind…

The very kind folks over at PG Tips have given me some tickets (two pairs) to BBC Gardeners’ World Live, which is taking place from the 15th – 19th June at Birmingham NEC. It’s all sponsored by PG Tips in aid of their new range of New Ones.

If you’re keen for these tickets, just drop me an email – thepotholegardener@yahoo.com with PG Tips in the subject line, along with your name and I’ll randomly choose two winners on the 9th of June.

Good luck!

A little pothole veggie garden…

Here’s my latest little garden. It’s a little bit different to my other Garden’s as there’s no mini-furniture, or even flowers (I know it’s not the prettiest but it has a purpose!).

I’ve been inspired by recent projects such as The Green Line and Landshare, and so decided to create a mini-vegetable patch.

The kind folk over at Urban-Allotments posted me some bits and pieces (I’ve never received plants in the mail, but why not!) and here is my mini-veggie patch with lettuce. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes :)

Hopefully I’ll be eating a salad with lettuce leaves from my pothole garden later this summer!

Oh, and to whoever stole my bike a few weeks back, I hope you’re taking good care of her.

A Royal Wedding garden part 2

I blogged yesterday about my adventures with Kate McAuley over in the Queen’s postcode creating a little garden to celebrate the upcoming royal wedding.

Well, we shot a wee video and here it is. Enjoy!

Thanks again to Kate McAuley you can check out her work on I am not a celebrity and Weather to Wear.

A pothole garden fit for a king (to be)

This morning I headed over to Pimlico. Now for those of you who know me, to date my pothole gardens have mainly been around East London. So why Pimlico I hear you ask…

Well I headed over to the Queen’s postcode to meet Kate McAuley, of I am not a celebrity and Weather to Wear, to create a little garden to celebrate the royal wedding!

Here is my little garden. Good luck to Will and Kate (my invite must have been lost in the mail…).

A pothole from Mexico

I was recently sent this picture along with the note:

Whilst driving on Mexico’s Yucatan highway 261 between Dzibalchen and Xpuhil in the Campeche region we hit this massive pothole.  As a result we lost our hub cap which after a bit of searching we managed to retreive (along with two others found only metres apart).  I thought this would be a great addition for your site.  I think the pot holes here are more enormous than London can produce.  We were fortunate some of the 3 wheel bikes that are used by the locals to get between their crops / farms and home were not in the oncoming path of our hub cap missile.

Now that is a pothole (with a very artistic head). Thanks so much for sending that to me, I do love getting mail!

Speaking of getting stuff in the mail I was stoked to get a copy of this book recently, and was even more delighted to read a section on my pothole gardening!

The book, Growing Vegetables, Flowers, Fruits, and Herbs From Containers is available from Atlantic publishing.

My biggest one yet…

Just around the corner of my house, this hole in the pavement has been annoying me…it’s huge, check it out!

It’s so huge, in fact, that I decided I couldn’t tackle it alone, so I enlisted some help! The Homebase team very generously helped me out by supplying all the compost and plants for this dig, my biggest yet!

This must be one of the biggest potholes in London!

As usual I ended up with a bunch of spectators who were not quite sure how to take the garden in progress!

Here’s the final garden.

Stay tuned for my next garden – I’m heading out with my friend Kate from i am not a celebrity and partner in crime in Weather to Wear (our fashion forecast based on the weather) to bring you a Will and Kate royal wedding special!

Thanks again to Homebase, who provided all the tools and materials to create this garden! You can shop online and buy everything you need for your garden (big or small…), from plants and compost through to garden furniture and greenhouses.

Ranunculus in shoreditch

The sunny weekend in London inspired me to head up to Columbia road markets and do some gardening. I found a nice new home for these ranunculus just near Arnold Circus in Shoreditch.

Thanks to Tom my new gardening buddy for his help!

Enjoy :)

Congratulations!

Just a quick note to say congratulations to the winners of the Mothers day vouchers I blogged about recently.

Lucy Allen, Liz Ixer and Renee Walker will all be getting some flowers delivered courtesy of Interflora later this week. Thank you Interflora for supporting the pothole gardener!

I know I haven’t posted any gardens recently, sadly my bike was stolen so I’ve been out of action. But don’t worry, I’m currently creating some new gardens so stay tuned :)

A little bloom to brighten up the gloom…

To help brighten up an otherwise fairly gloomy weekend, I created my latest little garden around the corner from Wilton’s Music Hall.

The kind folk supplying flowers onlineInterflora, have offered their support to my blog by giving away 3 fantastic treats from their flower shops (check out the goodies  here, here and here) to subscribers of the pothole gardener. 3 people who have subscribed to this blog will be chosen at random and sent one of the items before Mother’s Day! Simply subscribe to this blog by entering your email address in the box on the right hand side of this page and I’ll post up the winners names on the 30th of March and you’ll get your flowers delivered before Mother’s Day.

Spring is in the air!

It’s been so chilly lately that gardening hasn’t been on the top of my list of things to do I have to say. But with the recent warmish weather I’ve been inspired to get back out and hit the streets armed with a load of bulbs and some compost.

On yesterdays dig I was joined by Wendy Hurrell and the lovely crew from Inside London and we ventured to Sutton in South London where there is certainly no shortage of potholes.

More pictures to follow shortly!

Living Graffiti…

Earlier this year I spoke with Navid, a budding young filmmaker.

I thought I’d post his great little film about Guerilla Gardening.

Oh, and there will be a pothole garden with a Christmas theme coming soon so stay tuned :)

A Winter Garden

I recently headed out on a dig with a French TV crew for some guerilla gardening…it was load of fun – they sure were up for an adventure.

I snapped my latest little garden right before it was rundown :(

(I’m totally addicted to the hipstamatic app on my iphone!)

Here’s an excerpt from my recent interview for a German TV channel that I did earlier in the year…

New dig, on a new bike!

So yesterday’s cloudy weather didn’t deter punters at Columbia Rd. markets, it was super busy! I managed to grab some Gerberas and pansies for a couple of digs for the afternoon. I headed out with Stephanie from Londoninsight (pics to follow shortly!).

Columbia Rd Markets

I also decided to try out London’s new cycle hire scheme. If you want to know more about the scheme, check it out. My thoughts? If you’re not in a hurry, these bikes are great. They’re comfy and easy to ride. They cruise nicely, although I’m not sure I’d want to be heading up a steep hill on one. They do have a great little bag carrier on the front too (handy for pot plants!) I did feel like a Barclay’s advert, but hey I guess someone had to pay for them.

So here is my latest dig with Yellow Gerberas just off Bethnal Green Road…

My latest creation

We’ve recently shot a short film about these little gardens and we’re looking for music for the film. You can check it out and pitch your music tracks here on HUMTOO.

Whitechapel is sporting a new little garden!

My recent little garden is in support of the Aussie Cricket team…

I added some Pansies to this garden in support of The Pansy Project. They recently had their facebook page taken down for some unknown reason – to learn more check out their site: The Pansy Project.

I was recently sent these photos too which I wanted to post, check out this great effort from Riga!

Living Streets

In Today’s intermittent sunshine Rabea, Fred and Magnus joined me on my latest dig, well digs – we planted 3 little numbers. I don’t want to reveal all the pics from the digs just yet – but I did want to post a taster below, just snapped on my iphone.

In many ways, this blog is about bringing the streets to life. If you enjoy this blog and the photographs, why not think about donating to Living Streets? It’s a charity who work to create better streets and whose campaigning and policy work relies strongly on individual donations. I’m sure they’d be grateful for any amount of money people can contribute. You can learn more here, or donate directly here.

Guerrilla Gardening heros…

The past few days have been fairly hectic, to say the least! I’ve managed to get 2 gardens dug, and I’ve also been sent some links I wanted to post up on the blog.

I got a comment on the blog from Richard Reynolds (the godfather of Guerrilla Gardening) that was really positive about my work and I have been feeling quite chuffed ever since. He also pointed me towards some other keen Guerrilla Gardeners of note. The concept of pothole gardening goes back quite a while – the earliest example being a class in the states and also Shannon Spanhake and others have been flexing their green fingers in potholes too. Another great project in Dublin is happening here…

Guerrilla Gardening is all about getting out there, doing something, getting your hands dirty and creating something that improves the space you live in. So go on, get involved and if you need some inspiration, check out the pictures on my blog (mostly taken by Al) or head to the forums here! If you send me some photos of your work I might post them here on the blog.

I’m off to enjoy the sunshine (and hunt for a couple more potholes).

Oh, and I was sent this beauty earlier in the week from Kathy. She describes it as a ‘Surrey Special’…

'Surrey Special' sent in by Kathy

2 new digs, 8 & 9!

Yesterday was quite a busy day and I managed to complete 2 new digs, both with some company! It seems that my blog has caught the attention and imagination of the press…it’s been a little overwhelming to say the least.

A BBC news crew joined me on Dig 8. I headed up past Old Street to dig this small pothole. Here’s the finished pothole with the cameraman…

Dig 8 with BBC cameraman!

And the finished pothole about to meet it’s destiny…

Dig 8....almost run over!

Dig 9 was back in my old favourite pothole just off Commercial Street. I was joined by Sally, a lovely journalist from ITV.

Dig 9

These photos aren’t as good as Al’s work, but I’ll keep trying!

If you’re into guerrilla gardening (and into pothole gardening) check out some of my contemporaries work, including 2 more pothole gardeners I’ve come across here!

Dig 7

So this morning as I was heading off with some serious colours under my arm and I was checking off everything in my head. Plants, check…camera, check…sense of humour, check…bum crack, check…photographer from the Evening Standard, what the? I got a call from a journo the other day wondering if a photographer could join me on my next dig. This morning we headed to the pothole just off Commercial Street that I’d spied yesterday and away I went, working my ‘magic’.

Dig 7 - note the new graffitti I caught in the background, which was in progress yesterday!

Incidentally I just noticed that the photo I took yesterday had a guy in the background creating some graffiti. (Check out that post below) In these photos, you can see that finished piece of art! Whoever you are, you’re really talented!

“Sexy Geraniums”

A quick trip to the sunny Columbia Road markets this morning was made all the more merrier by a man selling ‘sexy Geraniums’ and ‘sexy Rain-daisies’.

Now, as someone who worked writing for UKTV gardens for a number of years, coming up with adjectives for plants and gardening is something I’m no stranger to. But this morning, I was very amused by my new favorite Columbia Road market seller. Here he is, with his ‘sexy Geraniums’…

So, armed with a bundle of colour under my arm (sadly I decided that sexy Geraniums were not good fodder for a pothole garden)…time to find some new potholes!

A Sneak Preview

In Sunday’s Spring-tastic sunshine, I headed out of East London (gasp) and up to Alexandra Palace in search of some potholes…

Working with designer/artist/photographer Al, we got some great snaps of our mini-gardens. They’ll be up here on the blog in the next day or so, so come back and check them out!

I’ll tweet about them too! www.twitter.com/potholegardener

2nd Dig

Here are some pics from my second dig on Saturday. Another glorious spring day inspired this little pink creation on the corner of Cremer St. and Hackney Road. A few amused passer bys gave us some smiles, and the garden lasted a few hours brightening up a few peoples day at least!

Thanks to fellow gardeners Lisa and Pete for their help :)

Dig 2 - Cremer Street

1st Dig

This morning, I completed my first dig, what a rush! I decided that Davenant St. was an appropriate target. There is a small pothole on the road there I regularly walk past that I figured I could spruce up.

The Target

I decided that I’d create a mini-garden consisting of a little white Primlet, and a pink Dianthus. Nice and simple. I thought the white would look good against the black tar (and be easily seen by motorists) and the pink would spruce it up.

My first pothgole garden!

Davenant St. avec pothole garden!

It went well, very well. It was a huge rush. I was lucky in the fact that no cars came past until after I’d finished and I managed to get a couple of quick snaps…

The vital stats for the dig: 2 plants, 7 cars and 9 strange looks and 1 beautiful pothole. One guy came out of his flat as I was finishing and it made him smile, which indeed made me smile.

My first dig was a success, I’m hooked! It’s just a pity I have to head off to work now…

Until next time!

My partners in crime.

First thing’s first. I need partners in crime – plants that is. So, a trip to London’s famous Columbia Road Markets is in order in today’s truly glorious sunshine.

Columbia Road Markets

Columbia Road Markets

The markets were packed. In fact, I’ve never seen it so busy! As I hunted for my first plants, I want to keep in mind my gardens need to short…there will be no tall plants in my pothole gardens as they’ll have an even shorter life! Also, they need to be colourful; I need to find plants that are in flower, that are striking, that will get peoples attention. And, of course they need to be hardy.

Hardy Dianthus...we'll see how hardy you really are...

Browsing through all the wonderful plants, I notice the Dianthus’s – the sign makes me laugh – I wonder how hardy this Dianthus really is…I think they are perfect, low, bright and hardy. And cheap. I will create one pothole garden from the Dianthus and I’ll create another one with primarily bulbs.

My partners in crime

After looking at loads and load of variety of Daffodils, I finally come across these glorious little White flowers…While they are quite plain on their own, I figure coupled with some yellow daffodils, they could be quite striking. The white will contrast nicely with the black tar around them and also, their simplicity and vulnerablity struck me, so I grabbed a bunch of them for my 2nd pothole garden.

The seeds have been planted!

This week’s sunshine has finally inspired me to get bloggin about my gardening adventures!

What is ‘The Pot Hole Gardener’ all about then? Well it’s a combination of things. My neighbourhood has a disctinct lack of green space; I’m a gardener with no garden. I want to spruce up my ‘hood, be it for just a few colouful moments. After almost falling over walking home with my shopping thanks to a well placed pothole, I’m making it my mission to highlight how crap our roads and footpaths are.

This is a project that’s part creative persuit, part passion and part urban experiment.

Inspired by the Geurilla Gardening gurus, I’m trying to srpuce up East London One pothole at a time.

Join me on my adventure!
